Almaty's flooding problem after rains remains unresolved for a decade. Residents demand a quality stormwater and drainage system, reports Todayinfo news agency.

This April in Almaty has been rainy. After almost every heavy rain, many city streets and spaces are flooded. Residents often share this on social media — with sadness, humor, but mostly with irritation and anger.

On April 30, 2016, after heavy rains, several lower districts of the city were flooded. The Algabas microdistrict suffered the most. According to residents, the main reason was the sale of land for individual housing construction right next to a drainage canal, which then became unusable.

A very heavy downpour also occurred on June 17, 2016. The consequences were catastrophic. One of the most popular videos from those days showed a Tesla driving through a flooded tunnel. Elon Musk himself commented on this.

Then-Prime Minister Karim Massimov reprimanded the mayor of Almaty and ordered the stormwater system to be fixed. However, the problem remains unresolved. Residents are waiting for real action from the authorities.
