Kazakhstan has recorded a significant shortage of places in student dormitories. This was stated by member of the Supreme Audit Chamber Tolegen Kaskyn during a government hour in the Mazhilis, reports Todayinfo news agency.
According to Kaskyn, for the 2024–2025 academic year, the deficit of places in dormitories exceeded 10,000, and the discrepancy between the data of the ministry and the operator amounted to more than 31,000 places. Housing provision is below the previous figure of 70%: at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University – 51.7%, at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University – 56.7%.
«In addition, KazNU and ENU spent more than 133 million tenge on purchasing cars for administrative needs,» the auditor said.
He also noted risks in administering the Bolashak program. «For 7.7 billion tenge, 340 candidates were awarded scholarships on an individual basis, even if they did not meet the general selection criteria, by decision of the Ministry. 151 scholarships were issued beyond the approved limit. The artificial intelligence block is especially indicative: out of the planned 54 scholarships, only 5 were awarded, the remaining 49 were redistributed to other areas,» Kaskyn said.
The results of a survey among teachers, students and graduates confirm the identified problems. According to the auditor, 46% of teachers consider wages uncompetitive, 41% of students call educational programs outdated and of low practical relevance, and 45% indicated that the infrastructure does not meet modern requirements.
