Freight Train Kills Railway Worker at Station in Karaganda Region

A track fitter was fatally struck by a freight train at Zhana-Karaganda station in Kazakhstan's Karaganda region. Police have launched a criminal investigation into the incident.

A freight train fatally struck a railway track fitter at Zhana-Karaganda station in the Karaganda region, reports Todayinfo. Police have initiated a criminal case.

The tragedy reportedly occurred on May 3, at approximately 02:03 AM, on the main track of the station. According to preliminary data, the electric locomotive was moving at about 60 km/h. The driver applied emergency braking, but a collision could not be avoided.

According to Polites, the deceased was a 4th-grade track fitter. The man, born in 1977, was allegedly guarding tools at the time of the incident.

After the event, the train was moved to the second track around 04:30 AM. The incident caused delays for several train compositions, ranging from a few minutes to over an hour and a half.

The press service of the Transport Police Department reported that a criminal case has been opened regarding the violation of railway transport safety or operation rules, which resulted in a person's death. Investigative actions are still underway, and law enforcement officers are not disclosing further information.

According to available data, the deceased had worked on the railway for over 28 years, was married, and was raising three children, two of whom are minors.

Earlier, Orda.kz reported on a similar tragedy on the railway in the Karaganda region: in December 2025, four workers from the track brigade of Saryshagan station died during emergency braking of a freight train on the Sheshinkara — Karazhangyl section.
