Kazakhstan pays special attention to environmental responsibility at the highest legislative level. This was stated by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking about the country's environmental agenda and outlining key directions of state policy in the field of sustainable development.

The head of state noted that environmental issues are enshrined in the country's basic law.

“Our new Constitution clearly defines environmental protection as one of the fundamental principles of state policy and civic responsibility. It confirms that environmental security and prosperity are not a technical issue. This is a genuine value that should become an integral part of our national identity and long-term development strategies.

Kazakhstan is implementing measures aimed at:

  • transition to cleaner energy;
  • biodiversity protection;
  • restoration of degraded lands;
  • modernization of water resource management systems;
  • implementation of water conservation policies;
  • and, of course, strengthening regional cooperation in the field of environmental protection.

We recognize that no country can succeed alone, so the main emphasis should be on joint efforts at the regional and global levels. We are implementing this agenda through practical actions, introduction of new technologies and long-term investments in strengthening resilience,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.

The President also announced Kazakhstan's plans for the development of green energy and reduction of emissions in the energy sector.

“A fair and equitable energy transition is a top priority. Currently, the share of renewable energy sources in the total electricity generated in Kazakhstan is more than 7 percent. It is expected to exceed 15 percent by 2030.

Remaining a major oil and gas producer, our country is committed to sustainable energy goals. As one of the world's leading uranium exporters, providing about 40 percent of global supplies, Kazakhstan also supports the development of carbon-free electricity.

Currently, we are developing a project to build our first nuclear power plant and at the same time modernizing coal-fired power plants using clean coal technologies.

Thus, emissions from large energy facilities are expected to decrease by almost 35 percent,” the head of state noted.
