Kenyan runner Sabastian Sawe, the first person to run a marathon in under two hours, was given a hero's welcome upon his return home, reports Todayinfo news agency.
Thousands of fans and journalists greeted him at Nairobi airport. Sawe's achievement shocked the sports world, and in Kenya he has become a national pride.
According to Al Jazeera correspondent Catherine Soi, Sawe's victory inspired many young Kenyans to take up sports. "He showed us that nothing is impossible," one fan said.
"I set this record not only for myself but for all of Kenya. Our country has so much talent; we just need to believe in it," Sawe said during the welcome ceremony.
Sabastian Sawe clocked 1 hour 59 minutes 40 seconds at the marathon held on April 30, 2026, setting a historic record. This achievement is regarded as one of the most significant events in world sports.
