A petition published on the Gosrating platform has raised the long-standing issue of regional inequality in education. The author proposes building a medical university in Petropavlovsk, reports Todayinfo news agency.

Currently, only one specialized university operates in northern Kazakhstan — the Astana Medical University. According to the petition's author, graduates from Kostanay, Petropavlovsk, Kokshetau, and other northern cities are forced to travel to Almaty, Astana, or Shymkent, which is far and financially disadvantageous.

“Traveling from Kostanay and Petropavlovsk to Almaty, Astana, or Shymkent is too far and financially unviable,” the petition author believes.

The new medical university could accommodate 10,000 students. Its construction would provide jobs for over 200 unemployed young people and create conditions for strong economic growth in the city. Commentators are divided: some support the initiative, noting the existing medical college in Petropavlovsk, while others consider the project a waste of budget funds.
