The Police Department of the East Kazakhstan Region has launched a pre-trial investigation into an incident at the Kazzinc LLP facility, reports Todayinfo.
A criminal case has been initiated under Article 156, Part 4 of the Criminal Code, concerning a violation of labor safety regulations that negligently caused the death of two or more people.
"Investigative teams are currently working at the scene. Initial measures are being taken to clarify all circumstances of the incident," the regional police department stated.
On the morning of May 5, a pop in a dust collection unit occurred on the plant's premises, leading to a fire and a partial collapse of the structure. The incident resulted in the death of two workers, with another five sustaining injuries.
Following the incident, specialists from Kazhydromet recorded excessive levels of harmful substances in the air of nearby residential areas. Air samples revealed elevated concentrations of hydrogen chloride, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon monoxide.
Kazzinc company reported that a special commission has been established to determine the causes and circumstances of the tragedy.
