In May, Kazakh cinemas will feature new films from the 'Star Wars' and 'Mortal Kombat' universes, as well as a Guy Ritchie movie with a superstar cast. Local filmmakers will delight audiences with the action comedy 'Khotya by Kinoda 4', the touching family story 'Babay', and the road movie 'Mangyshlak Express', reports Todayinfo.

'Khotya by Kinoda 4' – in theaters from May 7. The franchise about a corrupt official who catches other corrupt officials has won over audiences. The first part went unnoticed, the second grossed a billion tenge, and the third over 900 million. Producers decided not to take risks and invited Yernar Nurgaliyev ('Akeńniń balasy') again. The main character goes to Vietnam instead of Thailand. The cast includes Gulnaz Zholanova ('Taraz') and popular comedian Nurzhan Tulendiyev.

'Mortal Kombat 2' – from May 7. The long-awaited sequel tells of the decisive tournament between the best warriors of Earthrealm and champions of Outworld. Fans felt this was missing from the first film in 2021. Expect brutal scenes and many new characters, including Johnny Cage played by Karl Urban ('The Boys'). Director is Simon McQuoid.

'The Sheepish Detective' – from May 14. A fantasy comedy about a shepherd who reads detective stories to his sheep. One day he is found dead, and the sheep decide to investigate. Based on Leonie Swann's book. Directed by Kyle Balda ('Despicable Me', 'Minions'). Starring Hugh Jackman, with Brian Cranston, Emma Thompson, and Hong Chau.

'Mangyshlak Express. Panic on the Train' – from May 14. Another attempt by local filmmakers to make a comedy in one location. A train conductor learns an inspector is on board and tries to find him, but uncovers a world of dangerous secrets. Directed by Maksat Ospanov ('Ámeńger. Aǵama amanat'). Starring Aisholpan Baitugel, with Kanat Taskhan, Yerbolat Alkozha, Gulnaz Zholanova, and Beksultan Pilal.

'Revenge 2: Sister' – from May 14. The sister of a local crime boss is kidnapped by an unknown person, and he will do anything to find the maniac. Set in the 2000s. The first film was compared to 'Dástúr'. The sequel moves from mysticism to thriller but retains the director duo.

'The Mandalorian & Grogu' – from May 21. The first 'Star Wars' film in seven years tells the story of a space bounty hunter and his charge.
