A court in Almaty sentenced two former operational officers of the Nauryzbay district police department. They were accused of using unauthorized investigation methods against detainees, reports the Telegram channel Kozachkov offside.
Among the accused were a 32-year-old police captain and a 27-year-old lieutenant. They were charged with torture and abuse of official powers in the framework of a criminal investigation.
According to case materials, the incident occurred in the spring of last year after a resident of Almaty reported possible fraud involving a land plot. During operational measures, police officers identified suspected participants and brought several citizens to the police department.
The investigation found that, despite the presence of video surveillance cameras in the department building, part of the premises was used outside the recording area. According to the accusation, unauthorized methods of influence were used there to obtain confessions from detainees.
The case notes that the methods included physical violence and the use of available tools. After the incident, the victims gave testimony, but later the information was verified during the investigation.
As a result of the trial, a jury found the defendants guilty. The court classified their actions under the article on torture.
Each of the former police officers was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months of imprisonment.
The verdict has not yet entered into legal force. The issue of appeal by the parties to the process remains open.
