Azamat Kapenov, the former son-in-law of convicted ex-KNB chairman Karim Masimov, who is wanted by the Financial Monitoring Agency (FMA), has appeared in Kyrgyzstan. Kapenov recorded a video from Bishkek and showed a Kyrgyz passport. According to him, he was born in the city of Przhevalsk (now Karakol) in the Kyrgyz SSR and has always been a citizen of Kyrgyzstan. The passport was issued to him at the age of 16.

Before appearing in Bishkek, Kapenov was in the UAE. The FMA of Kazakhstan continues its international search for Kapenov. A court has authorized his arrest in absentia. Earlier, the court transferred Kapenov's terminal at the Dostyk station to the state at the request of the Main Transport Prosecutor's Office.

According to the investigation, the former vice president of Kaztemirtrans used his official position to provide affiliated companies with illegal preferences in working with freight cars. The damage to Kaztemirtrans is estimated at over 5.2 billion tenge. Kapenov was detained in the UAE in August 2025 but was released a month later. The Emirates refused extradition because the Kazakh side could not substantiate the charges with documents.

Kapenov and Masimov's daughter Tamila Karim married in 2015. After Masimov's arrest in January 2022, it became known that they had divorced. For more than two years, the former spouses litigated in Moscow over property and custody of their two sons. In June 2025, a Moscow court rejected Tamila Karim's claim for property division. According to Russian media, Kapenov owned a house in Serebryany Bor, a mansion in Zhukovka on Rublyovka worth 1.2 billion tenge, and an apartment in central Moscow.
