Earlier, it was reported that the Almaty metro planned to install protective glass barriers for seven billion tenge. The results were to be announced on April 28 on the public procurement website, reports Todayinfo news agency.
However, the lot status changed to 'refusal of purchase'. The metro press service explained that the lot, published on April 16, involved installing doors in 2026 at the Abay station for testing, and in 2027 at the remaining stations. But after consulting with technical specialists, it was decided to install platform doors at all stations simultaneously.
This decision was made because the door equipment is linked to the electric rolling stock equipment, and making changes to the software each time is costly. As a result, the lot was withdrawn to amend the technical specifications, with financing and timelines to be coordinated with the Almaty akimat.
It is worth recalling that metal railings had previously been installed at metro stations. Safety measures were strengthened after a tragedy in 2024 when 26-year-old Kanat Batkalgany, who had a visual impairment, died after falling onto the tracks, mistaking the empty space between carriages for an entrance.
