The United Nations chief has warned of the waning influence of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), reports Todayinfo.

The NPT is the most extensive arms-control agreement in the world, with 191 signatories. Its core principle is simple: countries without nuclear weapons will not acquire them, and those that have them will give them up.

However, in recent years, implementation of the treaty has flagged. Experts and diplomats warn that the risk of a nuclear arms race has never been higher. The UN chief also highlighted the declining influence of the global agreement.

Could a review of the NPT produce stricter measures to eliminate the threat? And how much of a danger does the US and Israel’s war with Iran pose globally?

To discuss these questions, the program featured Tariq Rauf, former head of verification at the IAEA; Kelsey Davenport, director for nonproliferation policy at the US Arms Control Association; and Seyed Hossein Mousavian, a former Iranian nuclear negotiator.
