Vladimir Putin told Donald Trump he is ready to declare a ceasefire for Victory Day, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov told journalists. The US president in turn called for a swift end to hostilities and noted Washington's readiness to facilitate the peace process. Washington will continue contacts with Moscow and Kyiv.
The presidents separately discussed the situation around Ukraine and the Middle East. Putin told Trump he considers correct his decision to extend the ceasefire regime regarding Iran, which should give a chance for negotiations and help stabilize the situation in the Middle East. He also noted that a US ground operation in Iran could lead to serious escalation.
Putin condemned the assassination attempt on Trump that occurred on April 25 at the Washington Hilton hotel and expressed his support. Russia will continue active contacts with Iran, Gulf states, Israel, and the US. Trump believes a deal to end the conflict in Ukraine is close. Disagreements between the US and European countries over Ukraine persist. Also, according to Trump, the issue of Iranian uranium was discussed during the call, but he did not disclose details of that part of the conversation, only noting the fact of the discussion.
The previous phone call between Putin and Trump took place in March.
