In China, former defense ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu have been found guilty in a large-scale corruption case and sentenced to death, reports Todayinfo.
According to the military court's decision, the ex-officials were accused of accepting and giving bribes. The investigation revealed that they used their official powers for personal gain.
Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu previously served as members of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China and held the status of state councilors. Both also served as the country's Minister of Defense.
By court decision, the former ministers were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve. Additionally, they are deprived of political rights for life, and all their property will be confiscated.
According to Chinese law, such a verdict is not immediately carried out. If the convicts do not commit a new crime within two years, the sentence may be commuted to a conditional life imprisonment. In some cases, this term may later be reduced to 25 years.
