Astana's regional gross product (RGP) grew by 11.6% in 2025, the best result among all regions of Kazakhstan, according to data from the Bureau of National Statistics (BNS).

The top three also included Shymkent (11%) and Turkistan region (9.3%). The lowest growth was recorded in East Kazakhstan region at 0.9%, followed by Abai region (1.2%) and West Kazakhstan region (1.3%).

Eight regions posted growth rates above the national average of 6.5%, while 12 regions performed worse. BNS calculates RGP growth using the physical volume index method, which adjusts monetary output for inflation.

In per capita RGP terms, Atyrau region leads, home to the Kashagan and Tengiz oil fields. By nominal RGP size, it ranks third after Almaty and Astana.

Kazakhstan's GDP reached 159.6 trillion tenge in 2025, with real growth accelerating to 6.5% from 5% in 2024. In the first quarter of this year, GDP grew 3% year-on-year, down from 5.6% a year earlier.

Halyk Finance analysts attribute the slowdown to a decline in the mining sector (due to a high base from last year's Tengiz capacity expansion), falling real incomes, and reduced fiscal stimulus. They forecast GDP growth of 4.8% in 2026.
