Hungary Elects New Prime Minister: Is the Orbán Era Over?

Péter Magyar has been elected as Hungary's new Prime Minister, reports Todayinfo.

The pro-European conservative politician Péter Magyar has officially assumed the post of Prime Minister of Hungary, succeeding the long-serving head of the Hungarian government, Viktor Orbán.

On Saturday, May 9, during the first session of the new legislative period, members of parliament in Budapest elected the 45-year-old leader of the "Tisza" party, which won the parliamentary elections in Hungary, as Prime Minister. His candidacy was supported by 140 parliamentarians, with 54 voting against and one abstaining.

Orbán was not present at the parliamentary session. He had refused to accept his parliamentary mandate in mid-April.

After taking the oath, Magyar promised that he would not "rule Hungary" but would "serve his country." He sharply criticized corruption within the "Orbán system," which he claimed had deprived Hungarians of "roads, hospitals, and schools" for two decades.

Magyar announced the creation of an independent body tasked with identifying abuses committed during Orbán's 16 years of continuous rule and recovering illegally appropriated funds.
