Kazakhstan continues to pay special attention to water and environmental security, said President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, emphasizing the key role of rational water resource management for the entire Central Asian region.
The head of state noted that water security is of strategic importance.
"Water security is a matter of exceptional importance for both Kazakhstan and all of Central Asia.
Our future depends on the rational and fair management of this vital resource.
The Aral Sea to this day serves as a harsh reminder of the consequences of irrational policies, as well as what can be achieved through decisive and scientifically based actions.
To date, we have managed to restore about 36 percent of the Northern Aral Sea, improving water quality, increasing fish stocks, and raising the standard of living of the population.
During today's high-level meeting of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, in which we will participate together with colleagues, Kazakhstan will complete its three-year chairmanship of this organization," Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.
The President also emphasized the need for international cooperation on the conservation of the Caspian Sea.
"Another object of concern for our country is the Caspian Sea.
Protection of this water body is of great importance for maintaining ecological balance, biodiversity, and sustainable development of the region.
Therefore, Kazakhstan initiated an interstate program to prevent further degradation of the Caspian Sea and established the Research Institute of the Caspian Sea to develop regional scientific cooperation.
We call on all international stakeholders to support efforts to preserve this unique natural heritage.
Therefore, any use of armed forces in the Caspian region must be excluded and prohibited," the head of state emphasized.
