Almaty authorities plan to build a new exhibition and congress complex, for which almost a hectare of private land along Kulzha Highway will be expropriated. The future Expo center is positioned as a venue for international forums, exhibitions, and business events, with a focus on the MICE segment and business tourism.
The construction site covers about 10 hectares, most of which is already state-owned. Three private plots totaling 0.957 hectares are subject to seizure: 92 Kulzha Highway (0.56 ha), 70/2 Kulzha Highway (0.147 ha), and a plot along the Korgas–Almaty highway (0.25 ha). No other land will be taken.
Currently, authorities are collecting documents and conducting an independent assessment to determine compensation for owners. One plot houses a commercial facility that will be demolished; there is no residential development on the site. The project is initiated by the Almaty Tourism Department and is at the concept development stage. The exact cost, funding sources, and construction timeline have not been disclosed. The involvement of private investors or public-private partnership mechanisms remains open.
The City Development Center notes that such venues globally become growth points, attracting business events and high-spending tourists. Specific parameters of the Almaty project will be known only after the concept is approved and design documentation is prepared.
