A highway from Kazakhstan to Mongolia is planned to be built through Russia, but the project currently has no approved budget or timeline. This was revealed in a response from the Ministry of Transport to a query, reports Todayinfo.
Earlier, the presidents of Kazakhstan and Mongolia agreed in Akorda to work on building a direct highway between the two countries. The basic route has been determined: Ust-Kamenogorsk — Ridder — the Russian border, then through the Altai Republic to Mongolia. This option is considered a priority as the shortest and most logistically advantageous.
Alternative routes, including through China, are also being considered but without specifics. Specialists are refining the route, assessing road conditions, and determining the need for new sections. Notably, there is a gap of about 30 km in Russia where the road will have to be built from scratch.
The timeline is not yet disclosed, as the project requires coordination with Russia and Mongolia, as well as economic feasibility studies. Kazakhstan has already planned repairs on its section for 2024–2027. The final cost and funding sources are also undetermined.
“The project is seen as a key factor in developing the transport, logistics, and tourism potential of Kazakhstan, especially the East Kazakhstan region. Currently, the route to Mongolia is about 1,700 km, which increases travel time and hinders ties. The new route could be reduced to 859 km,” the Ministry of Transport said.
The ministry expects the project to boost roadside services, hotels, and catering.
