The Polish Ministry of Interior is preparing a package of legislative changes aimed at tightening the rules for obtaining citizenship, reports Todayinfo.
According to the ministry, the new model should put an end to "automatism" and ensure that Polish passports are granted only to individuals genuinely connected with the Polish state and culture, who have undergone real integration into society.
Under the Interior Ministry's proposal, the period of legal residency before obtaining citizenship may be extended to eight years – three years of temporary residence and five years of permanent residence. This, according to the authorities, will allow for a more thorough evaluation of candidates.
The introduction of a mandatory state examination on Polish history and constitutional values is also planned, along with a language proficiency test at a level no lower than B2. Separately, the requirement to confirm loyalty and tax residency is being discussed.
The ministry states that citizenship should be viewed as a "deserved privilege, not a formal certificate," and emphasizes the need to strengthen integration and social cohesion. The final parameters of the reform are currently under development.
