Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari told reporters at a weekly briefing that the Strait of Hormuz must not be used as a bargaining chip. The statement comes as peace talks between the US and Iran continue to stall.
Al-Ansari said that using international sea lanes for political purposes poses a major threat to the global economy and security. He stressed that the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz must be preserved.
Commenting on the stalled US-Iran talks, the spokesman said Qatar would continue its diplomatic efforts to maintain stability in the region. Qatar has previously acted as a mediator between Iran and the US.
