Romania has enacted a new law that tightens punishment for the killing of women. Such crimes are now classified as a separate category called 'femicide', which in the most severe cases carries a sentence of life imprisonment, reports Todayinfo.

According to President Nicușor Dan, the issue of violence against women has long been underestimated, and the state's response was not sufficiently strict. The new law turns the protection of women and children into a functioning mechanism.

Under the new provisions, femicide is punishable by 15 to 25 years in prison, and in the most severe cases, life imprisonment. According to statistics, in the first eight months of 2025 alone, 33 people died as a result of family conflicts, most of them women.
