President Donald Trump has informed Congress that U.S. military hostilities against Iran have 'ceased,' and therefore he does not need legislative approval to continue the operation beyond the 60-day legal deadline, reports Todayinfo.
Military actions against Iran began on February 28. Trump officially notified Congress on March 2, triggering a 60-day countdown under the War Powers Act, which expired on May 1.
On the 60th day after the notification, Trump sent a letter to congressional leaders stating:
"Since April 7, 2026, there has been no exchange of fire between the armed forces of the United States and Iran. The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have ceased."
Meanwhile, Iranian authorities consider a resumption of hostilities a 'likely' scenario. Iranian state media reported that the country, with Pakistan's mediation, has sent a new proposal for negotiations with the U.S.
Following this news, global oil prices, which had surged since Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, declined. In response to Iran's offer, President Trump stated that he is 'not satisfied with what they are offering.'
