Circumstances of the incident
The Secret Service cordoned off the banquet hall where hundreds of people had gathered. Witnesses heard between 5 and 8 shots.
The shooter was unable to enter the hall; the incident occurred in another part of the hotel. The suspect was soon detained. He is a 31-year-old resident of Southern California, a teacher at a private educational institution. He was staying at the hotel but was not invited to the dinner. It is believed he acted alone.
According to the president, the assailant was armed with multiple weapons and fired at a Secret Service agent. The agent was saved by a bulletproof vest.
Trump's statement
Donald Trump on his Truth Social page thanked law enforcement for their prompt actions.
"The Secret Service and law enforcement did a great job. They acted quickly and bravely. The assailant has been detained," the president wrote.Due to the incident, the meeting with journalists was postponed. Security measures at the hotel were maximally strengthened.
