In eastern Chad's Igota region, a dispute over a water source has resulted in 42 deaths. Another 10 people were injured, reports Todayinfo news agency.
To stabilize the situation, President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno sent a high-level government delegation. The delegation includes Vice Prime Minister Liman Mahamat, Defense Minister Issaka Maloua Djamous, and Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Abakar Abdelkerim Daoud.
According to Vice Prime Minister Liman Mahamat, this is not a "classic intercommunal conflict." It started as a dispute between two families over a water source and later escalated into a chain of hostility.
Authorities noted that the prompt intervention of security forces prevented the situation from worsening. Currently, the situation is under control in several areas.
The injured were evacuated to medical facilities in the region. Two parallel resolution procedures have been launched – a traditional one for the civil component and a judicial one to determine responsibility.
The government intends to strengthen security measures in the eastern provinces. This region is under additional pressure due to the influx of refugees from Sudan and rising tensions related to resources and security.
