The meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Gabala was one of the most mysterious diplomatic events of the spring. Official sources only reported 'important negotiations,' but behind the scenes, issues that could change the balance of power in the region were resolved.
Zelensky's sensational statement revealed the main purpose of the visit. For the first time, it was stated that Ukraine considers Azerbaijan as a future platform for trilateral negotiations involving the United States and, under certain conditions, Russia. Baku, which maintains complex relations with both sides, could become a real competitor to other peace platforms.
The second strategic goal of the meeting was the creation of a defense tandem. The presidents confirmed the transition to joint production of military-industrial complex products. This implies a full-fledged 'co-production' of modern weapons systems on the territory of Azerbaijan, where Ukraine gains access to resources and Baku to advanced technologies.
In addition to the military bloc, the parties focused on the energy shield. Amid attacks on infrastructure, Baku expressed readiness to supply humanitarian aid and expand the presence of SOCAR in Ukraine. New logistics routes connecting the Caspian and Europe were also discussed, signaling the birth of a new axis of cooperation where economy and defense go hand in hand.
