Hundreds of millions of tenge embezzled during the construction of the Almaty metro have been returned to the state. The court sentence demonstrated the inevitability of liability for financial crimes, reports Todayinfo news agency citing the Prosecutor General's Office.
According to the Prosecutor General's Office, officials of the state enterprise "Metropolitan" conspired with heads of contractor organizations to organize a scheme to embezzle budget funds allocated for the construction and equipping of the Almaty metro. The state suffered particularly large-scale damage.
By the verdict of the Almaly District Court, 10 officials of the state enterprise "Metropolitan" and the contractor organization were sentenced to long prison terms with confiscation of property and were ordered to jointly compensate for the damage caused.
"During the verification of the legality of the court act in cassation, 127 million tenge of the embezzled funds were found on the bank accounts of another legal entity. Following the prosecutor's cassation protest, the court acts were amended, and the money was turned into state revenue," the Prosecutor General's Office clarified.
Thus, the state recovered a significant portion of the lost funds. This was an important result of the work of law enforcement and judicial bodies.
