European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has urged US President Donald Trump to honor the trade agreement signed with the European Union, reports Todayinfo. This statement follows Trump's threats to increase tariffs on European cars.
Von der Leyen stressed that "a deal is a deal" and must be fulfilled. She also added that the European Union is "ready for all scenarios."
Earlier, on May 1, Trump announced his intention to raise tariffs on light and heavy commercial vehicles from the EU from the current 15 percent to 25 percent. This decision would primarily impact German automakers.
Last August, Trump committed to limiting tariffs at 15 percent. He now accuses the EU of failing to fulfill its part of the agreement, specifically regarding the abolition of European tariffs on American industrial goods.
This issue is still under negotiation between the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. Von der Leyen called for respect for "democratic procedures" and reminded that the European Union is in the "final stages" of negotiations.
Another round of internal EU negotiations is scheduled for May 6. Whether an agreement will be reached remains unknown. The possibility of linking the abolition of European tariffs to full compliance with other conditions is also being discussed.
